Slipping, Sliding, and Smiling: ICM Students Hit the Ice in Mechelen

This week, first-year students in International Communication and Media traded in their lecture halls for something a little cooler—literally. As part of Activity Week, a week dedicated to culture, inspiration, and team bonding, we laced up our skates and took over the ice rink in Mechelen.

For some international students, this was their very first time ice skating. Nervous laughs quickly turned into confident glides (and a few entertaining tumbles). But more importantly, it became a moment to connect, laugh, and support each other off-campus.

More Than Just a Fun Day Out

At ICM, we believe in learning by doing—and that doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Activities like these aren’t just about having fun (although we definitely did). They’re a part of building strong international teams, developing soft skills, and making memories that last far beyond graduation.

Even the Inspiration Lab coaches joined in on the fun. Miet Lust, one of the coaches, shared:

“It was truly heartwarming to see the students come alive like that!”

Graphic Design and Photoshop lecturer Sandra Busselot added:

“We’ve noticed how important it is to just do something for the sake of team building—completely separate from courses or grades. Definitely worth repeating!”

Want More of This? We’ve Got You Covered

If you’ve caught the skating bug—or want to try out other activities—Thomas More students get awesome discounts through STUVO, the student services department. Whether it’s sports, cultural events, or wellness sessions, there’s always something happening around campus to help you balance your studies with fun.

So yes, we’re serious about creative skills, international teamwork, and storytelling—but we also know when to just enjoy the moment. That’s what makes ICM more than a study programme. It’s a community.
